Caprese Skewers
Caprese Skewers
Caprese skewers are an elegant, no-cook appetizer that captures the essence of Italian summer. These colorful bites combine fresh mozzarella, sweet cherry tomatoes, and fragrant basil, finished with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Named after the island of Capri where the classic Caprese salad originated, these skewers are perfect for parties because they can be assembled in advance and require no cooking.
Ingredients
- 20 cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes
- 20 fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini or ciliegine)
- 20 fresh basil leaves
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze
- 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 20 wooden skewers or toothpicks
Instructions
- Prepare ingredients: Wash and dry the cherry tomatoes. Drain the mozzarella balls and pat dry. Wash and gently pat dry the basil leaves.
- Assemble skewers: Thread one cherry tomato onto a skewer, followed by a folded basil leaf, then a mozzarella ball. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Arrange on platter: Place the assembled skewers on a serving platter in a single layer.
- Season: Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and freshly ground pepper.
- Serve: Serve immediately, or refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving. Bring to room temperature 15 minutes before serving for best flavor.
Chef's Tips
- Use fresh mozzarella packed in water for the creamiest texture.
- If cherry tomatoes are large, use mozzarella balls of similar size for balance.
- Make your own balsamic glaze by simmering balsamic vinegar until reduced by half.
- For best flavor, use tomatoes at room temperature, not cold from the refrigerator.
- Add a small slice of prosciutto to each skewer for a heartier version.
